How to install Minecraft shaders on a Mac
By Ryleigh Newman · Published · Updated
There are three ways to install Minecraft shaders on a Mac in 2026, and the choice is really a choice of graphics backend. Iris is a Fabric mod that loads shader packs from a shaderpacks folder and runs on the game's OpenGL backend. OptiFine does the same job from its own launcher profile, also on OpenGL, and on 2026-09-19 its newest download was a preview for Minecraft 26.1.2, with nothing for 26.2 or 26.3. Rockstar Shaders is a Fabric mod for Minecraft 26.3 with the shader pack inside the jar; it renders only on the game's Vulkan backend and only on an Apple Silicon Mac.
I am Ryleigh Newman and I made Rockstar Shaders, so the third route is mine. The facts about Iris and OptiFine come from their own sites and Modrinth pages, read on 2026-09-19. The short version of my route is on the install page; this page is the longer one, with the other two routes beside it.

The backend decides the route
Minecraft Java 26.3 has two renderers. A fresh profile starts on OpenGL, and the other one, Vulkan, is chosen under Graphics API in Video Settings and takes effect at the next launch. Mojang said in February 2026 why the second renderer exists: OpenGL "is being deprecated on macOS, and in the future OpenGL will not run at all on macOS devices", and once Vulkan is stable across devices they "will remove the OpenGL implementation". No date was given, and I am not giving one either.
The shader routes sit on opposite sides of that line. Iris's release note for Minecraft 26.2 says "Note that Vulkan is not supported", and OptiFine's newest builds stop at Minecraft 26.1.2 with a feature list written around OpenGL. Rockstar Shaders is the other way round: on OpenGL it writes one warning to the log and renders nothing, and at the title screen it asks to switch. So before choosing a pack, choose the backend, because nothing on this page runs on both.
Route 1: Iris and a shader pack
Iris is an open-source shader mod, licensed LGPL-3.0, that loads OptiFine-format shader packs, and its site says it "ships with Sodium for optimized rendering out of the box". It is on Modrinth for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, and its newest build on 2026-09-19 was 1.11.6+26.3 for Minecraft 26.3, released on 2026-09-15 with the note "Fixes a bug stopping macOS from loading."
The route: install Fabric Loader for 26.3 with Fabric's installer, put the Iris jar and the Sodium jar in the mods folder (Modrinth lists Sodium as a required dependency, and the Iris installer puts both in at once), start the game, and drop a shader pack zip into the shaderpacks folder, which sits beside the mods folder. The pack is chosen on the Shader Packs screen under Video Settings, its own options live behind Shader Pack Settings, and in Iris K turns shaders off and on.
What to know first: Iris's driver support page lists "All drivers on ARM / M1 macs" as "Not supported, drivers have known crash issues with common shaders", and Intel Macs as "Deprecated, support will be removed in future releases", because "Apple has deprecated support for the industry-standard OpenGL API, which we depend on." Apple's own table of OpenGL versions tops out at 4.1 on every Mac it lists. A pack may load and run; that sentence is what its maker promises when it does not. The full picture is on Iris Shaders on a Mac.
Route 2: OptiFine and a shader pack
OptiFine is the older route. Its jar is an installer: run it and it creates an OptiFine profile in the Minecraft launcher, and shader packs then go in the shaderpacks folder and are chosen under Shaders in Video Settings. It is not a Fabric mod and does not go in the mods folder.
On 2026-09-19 the newest download on optifine.net was OptiFine HD U K1 pre2, a preview for Minecraft 26.1.2 dated 22 June 2026 and marked "not compatible with Forge"; the newest full release was HD U J9 for Minecraft 1.21.11, dated 5 February 2026. There is no OptiFine for 26.2 or 26.3. The OptiFine route on a Mac therefore means playing an older Minecraft, on OpenGL, with the same Apple sentence attached. OptiFine on a Mac has the rest, including which OptiFine resource-pack features Rockstar Shaders reads without OptiFine.
Route 3: Rockstar Shaders
Rockstar Shaders is a Fabric mod for Minecraft Java 26.3. The shader pack is inside the jar, so there is no pack file, no shaderpacks folder and no resource-pack slot; the jar and the Fabric API jar go in the mods folder and that is the whole install. It needs Fabric Loader 0.19.5 or newer, Fabric API, Java 25 or newer, and a Mac with an M1 or later chip. It is client only; nothing is installed on a server.
It runs on the game's Vulkan backend, which on macOS is MoltenVK, and its ray tracing is a native Metal side-car packaged inside the jar. Because a fresh profile starts on OpenGL, the first launch shows a confirm screen at the title screen, "Rockstar Shaders needs the Vulkan graphics API", with the buttons Switch to Vulkan and quit and Not now. The first button sets the option, saves it and quits; the next start is on Vulkan. By hand, the same thing is Graphics API under Video Settings, then a restart; in options.txt the line is preferredGraphicsBackend:"vulkan", with the quotes, because the unquoted form fails to parse and the game falls back to OpenGL.
In a world, K opens the settings: 82 settings in 11 categories plus an Advanced page. The header under the title says whether the pack is rendering. What 1.0 means here: it is the first release, it has been measured on exactly one machine, an Apple M4 Max with 48 GB, Intel Macs, Windows and Linux are not supported, and the jar is a free download from rockstarshaders.com (Modrinth pending). The steps with nothing else around them are on the install page, and the first run is walked through on First launch.
Where the mods folder is on a Mac
For the official launcher it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods, which is the path Iris's own guide gives for macOS and where every Fabric mod on this page goes. Fabric's installer page also lists MultiMC, CurseForge, GDLauncher and ATLauncher; with those, the mods folder is the one belonging to the instance you installed Fabric into. The shaderpacks folder that Iris and OptiFine use sits beside mods at the same level; Rockstar Shaders never creates one. Fabric's page adds that "Most mods will also require you to install Fabric API into the mods folder": Rockstar Shaders does, while Iris lists only Sodium as required on Modrinth.
If the world still looks like vanilla
For Rockstar Shaders, the settings screen tells you first. Under the title, "Rendering with Rockstar Shaders, pipeline generation N." means the pack is on. "The pack is switched off; vanilla is on screen." means the master switch, the first row under General, is off. "The pack is not rendering (see the log); vanilla is on screen." means something failed, and logs/latest.log in the Minecraft folder says what: search it for RockstarShaders, one word. A line beginning "RockstarShaders requires the Vulkan backend" means the switch did not happen; "RockstarShaders: options ask for Vulkan but the game is running on" means the option was written but did not take, and Video Settings is the place to set it again. The whole list is on Troubleshooting.
For Iris, the FAQ's own first checks are an outdated Indium, Sodium Extras or Better Sodium Menu, an unsupported pack, an incompatible mod, or "You're using macOS, which has limited support." For OptiFine, the first check is the version: the profile it made is for the Minecraft it was built for, not for 26.3.
Which route to take
On an Apple Silicon Mac with Minecraft 26.3 on the Vulkan backend, the route is Rockstar Shaders, with the release's terms read first: one machine measured, settings that can move between builds, a few things known to be wrong. If the pack you want is a named one, Complementary, BSL or Sildur's, the route is Iris on OpenGL, with Iris's own sentence about Apple Silicon read first. If you are on an older Minecraft, or on an Intel Mac, the routes are Iris or OptiFine on OpenGL, and Rockstar Shaders is not for you. The roundup at best Minecraft shaders for a Mac puts the packs side by side, and Minecraft shaders on a Mac explains why the Mac is the odd platform out in the first place.

Questions
Do I need Iris or OptiFine to install Rockstar Shaders?
No. Rockstar Shaders is its own Fabric mod with the shader pack inside the jar. It needs Fabric Loader 0.19.5 or newer and Fabric API, nothing else, and it does not load Iris or OptiFine shader packs.
Can I install Iris and Rockstar Shaders at the same time?
They never render together. Iris's release note for Minecraft 26.2 says Vulkan is not supported, and Rockstar Shaders renders only on Vulkan. Pick the backend and you have picked the mod.
Where do shader packs go on a Mac?
For Iris and OptiFine, in the shaderpacks folder beside the mods folder, which for the official launcher is under ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. Rockstar Shaders has no pack file; its jar goes in mods.
Does Rockstar Shaders work on an Intel Mac?
No. Its ray tracing needs a Metal device that supports ray tracing, and the release notes say Apple Silicon, M1 or later. Nothing in the record has been run on an Intel Mac.
Which Minecraft version do I need?
Rockstar Shaders needs Java Edition 26.3. Iris has builds for 26.3. OptiFine's newest download on 2026-09-19 was a preview for 26.1.2 and its newest release was for 1.21.11.
Why does Rockstar Shaders ask to quit the game?
The graphics backend only changes at a launch. The prompt sets Graphics API to Vulkan, saves the options and quits; the next start is on Vulkan. Not now leaves the game as it is and the pack stays off until the backend is Vulkan.
